Global Research University with Autonomy 2011 - present

Seoul National University was a governmental organization since its establishment. Major decisions should be authorized by the government, and university presidents could be dismissed for political reasons. SNU community members had long been seeking true autonomy. In 2011, SNU finally changed its legal status to an incorporated entity.

  • Dec. 15, 2011 Article of Incorporation for Seoul National University drafted
  • Dec. 28, 2011 Incorporation of Seoul National University
    Seoul National University changed its legal status from a government organization to an incorporated university law.
    - The official name of the University changed as Seoul National University Incorporated
    - SNU Board of Trustees established as the highest decision-making body
    - Faculty’s direct election for president abolished; Board of Trustees elect the president
    - Legal positions of faculty and staff changed from public officers to employees of the incorporation

  • Jan. 4, 2012 SNU Board of Trustees, newly organized after the incorporation, held its first meeting
  • Jan. 26 – Feb. 10, 2012 Freshmen College first offered to newly accepted students
  • Feb. 2012 Undergraduate tuition fee lowered by 5%
  • Feb. 2012 Three departments in the Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology -- Departments of Nano Science and Technology, Digital Contents Convergence, and Intelligent Convergence Systems - merged to become Department of Transdisciplinary Studies
  • May 2012 Chairman LEE Jong-hwan of the Kwanjeong Educational Foundation donated 60 billion KRW to build SNU's second library
  • July 31, 2012 Leading Creative Researchers project implemented, aiming to produce Nobel Prize winners among SNU faculty by providing generous grants to promising scientists. Eight professors selected as the first: Professors BAEK Sung Hee (biological sciences), HYEON Taeghwan (chemical engineering), IHM Jisoon (physics), KIM Kyu Won (pharmacy), KIM V. Narry (biological sciences), KIM Sung Hoon (pharmacy), KWON Sunghoon (electrical engineering), and PARK Seong Hoe (medicine). Annual research grants ranging from 260 million to 400 million were given to the selected professors respectively.
  • Aug. 22, 2012 Support Program for Young Scholars in Basic Disciplines implemented. 96 students selected as the first recipients
  • Dec. 31, 2012 45 new staff members hired through the first open competitive staff recruitment process
  • Feb. 1, 2013 Daw Aung San Suu Kyi awarded 111th SNU honorary doctorate
  • Feb. 2013 Institute for Global Social Responsibility (IGSR) established to provide local and international societies with organized volunteer programs
  • Mar. 1, 2013 Number of tenure-track foreign faculty reached 100
  • Aug. 14, 2013 SNU President Fellowship introduced to support faculty from developing countries to pursue doctoral studies at SNU
  • Oct. 2013 Number of students receiving financial aid from the university reached 51% as of 2013
  • Mar. 28, 2014 Online free lecture service offered via global platform edX (http://www.edx.org/school/snux)
  • Mar. 2014 Bio-Max Institute renamed as N-BIO (New Innovation Entrepreneur Convergence)
  • Apr. 9, 2014 Big Data Institute (BDI) established
  • June 12, 2014 SNU Pyeongchang Campus, a bio technology complex in Pyeongchang, opened
  • Sept. 1, 2014 Graduate School of International Agriculture Technology (GSIAT) opened in Pyeongchang campus
  • Sept. 16, 2014 Placed 31st among world universities according to QS World University Rankings
  • Oct. 8, 2014 Wide River Institute of Immunology (WRII) opened in Hongcheon-gun
  • Feb. 5, 2015 Kwanjeong Library opened
  • July 1, 2015 Chinese President XI Jinping donated 10,000 Chinese books to the University Library
