Professor LEE Ho Young Chooses SNU over MD Anderson Cancer Center
October 21, 2013 Professor Ho Young Lee of the College of Pharmacy, who chose to return to SNU instead of pursuing a career at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, had an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper. Professor Lee was the first Korean to receive tenure at MD Anderson, and her salary shrunk to one third of what she previously earned when she came to SNU. But her experience at MD Anderson led to a joint research project between SNU and MD Anderson, and a student exchange program is on the way. Professor Lee says that while her work was mainly centered on research at MD Anderson, she has more time to teach here at SNU which she believes is her true calling. more

World’s First Cloned Dog SNUPPY Shows Higher Genetic Concordance Rate than Twins
October 22, 2013 Professor JANG Gu of the SNU College of Veterinary Medicine and the SNU Genome Research Team proved that the genes of the world’s first cloned dog, Snuppy, match that of the cell contributing dog almost 100%. While the authenticity of Snuppy, who was born in April 2005, was contested due to the Dr. HWANG Woo Suk scandal, in 2006 the SNU Investigation Committee and Nature concluded that Snuppy is a genuine clone. This research team’s recent findings show that Snuppy is genetically identical to the cell contributing dog by approximately 100%, which is a higher concordance rate than that found in human twins. The research was published in the online version of Scientific Reports. more
SNU College of Education to Select Students on a Departmental Basis
October 23, 2013 Starting in 2015, the College of Education, which has been selecting freshmen students on a broad college basis, will abolish such an admissions system. The college-based admissions system was first introduced 13 years ago to increase students’ interest in diverse areas of study, but has been constantly criticized as most students only chose popular departments for their major, leading to a shortfall of students in unpopular departments. The College of Social Sciences and the College of Humanities will be the only two Colleges to continue a college unit admissions system. more
SNU’s Scholarship Rate Exceeds Fifty Percent
October 24, 2013 SNU granted a total amount of 45,600,000,000 KRW in scholarships to undergraduate students, with 25,875 students (74.1 percent of undergraduate students) receiving scholarships. SNU’s scholarship rate remained low until 2009 at 38%, but with SNU not raising tuition fees and the introduction of National Scholarships the rate has risen. With the help of government funding in the form of National Scholarships, SNU was able to grant scholarships to students whose monthly household income was below KRW 4,510,000, up from the previous KRW 3,440,000 limit. Also, the SNU Hope Scholarship, which is an alumni scholarship established in 2010, granted a total of KRW 9,100,000,000 to 3828 students. more
