A Bust of Dr. Dawon KAHNG, the Semiconductor Hero
September 23, 2014 The SNU Inter-University Semiconductor Research Center will construct a bust of the late Dr. Dawon Kahng, a world renowned semiconductor engineer. Dr. Kahng (1931-1992) graduated from SNU (Department of Physics) and went on to work for Bell Laboratories for twenty years, where he developed the critical technology for semiconductors. The MOS-FET semiconductor he invented enabled high-integrated chips, laying the foundation for today’s Intel CPUs and D-Ram used by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. For this Dr. Kahng was named a fellow of the IEEE and Bell Laboratories and has a place in the US National Inventors Hall of Fame. He frequently attended seminars in Korea during the 1960s and 70s to impart advanced technology to South Korea. Dr. Kahng’s bust is currently being sculpted by College of Arts Professor LEE Yong Deok, and will be placed at the entrance of the Inter-University Semiconductor Research Center. more
