Professor Dan Shechtman Returns After Presidential Election Run
September 17, 2014 Professor Dan Shechtman, winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, returned to SNU after running for president in his home country Israel. He said he ran for president to “reform the education system which is a mess.” He expressed his view that human resources is the most important resource in Israel but many students refuse to study math and physics, opting instead to become lawyers and CEOs. He argued that children need to be taught science from kindergarten in a way that they feel science is easy and fun. For this, he has actually appeared on national television in a program that teaches basic science principles to young children. Professor Shechtman also emphasized entrepreneurship for engineering students, saying that universities should teach students how to start their own businesses. more

Interview with Professor Hilary V. Finchum-Sung
September 18, 2014 Seoul Shinmun had an interview with Professor Hilary V. Finchum-Sung, who became the first non-Korean faculty member of the Department of Korean Music in 2009. She first encountered Korean traditional music seventeen years ago through sinawi, a form of Korean shamanic music, and received her doctorate degree in music anthropology at Indiana University. She learned to play the haegeum (a traditional Korean instrument) to better understand Korean music and performs at Namsan Hanok Village and Deoksugung regularly. Her undergraduate course World Music has drawn much attention as the class explores Asian, African and Latin American music from an anthropologic perspective. The fact that Koreans are uninterested in their own traditional music means, she says, that we need a traditional Korean music teacher pool system to allow our children to be better acquainted with it. more
