SNU made an agreement with Seoul City on October 13 to establish the Seoul Wild Animal Rescue Center by remodeling the SNU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The remodeling process will equip the Center with rescue vehicles, capture apparatuses and professional staff so that the Center can begin operating in 2017.

The main purpose of the Rescue Center is to systematically rescue and treat wild animals that have been endangered due to accidents, road kills, diseases and habitat destruction. The Center will also rehabilitate rescued animals and conduct studies on effective disease control to further protect wildlife whose natural habitat is threatened by urban growth.

SNU’s research capacity and its wild animal genome resource bank in particular are expected to play a significant role in the advancement of wildlife rehabilitation, as well as in the training of competent veterinarians.

CHOI Kwang-bin, Director of the Landscape Division of Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, “The establishment of the Seoul Wild Animal Rescue Center will create an environment where humans and animals can stably coexist even in downtown Seoul, therefore positively contributing to Seoul’s biological diversity.”
