Shares of Beauty Extracted from Life

The collection of artworks mirrors the critical purpose and achievements of the art museum. The collection is also a highly academic theme surrounding the history, context, and vision of the community to which the art museum belongs.

Art collections reflect how a museum, or a specific era or society, perceives the balance between aesthetic and communal values. While there are outstanding collections that set high standards, it's not uncommon to find cases where this equilibrium is lacking. Some collections merely follow contemporary trends, collective learning, or preferences. Urgency exists in exposing the superficiality of current awareness, driven by a focus on marketing and blue-chip artists, neglecting rich interpretation and appreciation, and fostering exhibitionism and fame-related competition.

Cultivating a deep, fragrant, and unique vision of beauty and offering it to the community is an integral part of the duty of a group that claims to possess intellect. This concern resonates deeply with Seoul National University Art Museum and extends to Seoul National University in the troubled times it must embrace. After contemplating what constitutes a profound and fragrant awareness of beauty, the proposition "Shares of Beauty Extracted from Life" emerged.

May the "2024 Seoul National University Art Museum Collection Exhibition" be a modest step towards renewing perspectives and tastes in the pursuit of beauty for all participants.
